Terms of Service

Last updated: October 8, 2026

These terms are the agreement between you and Layout’s developer when you use Layout or buy a license. Privacy says what Layout stores, reads, and sends, and License shows how to enter and move your key.

Layout is made by Emanuel Quimper. His company, 9478-6787 Québec inc., in Quebec, Canada, provides Layout and grants its licenses. In these terms, “the developer” means that company. Polar resells Layout as the merchant of record.

By downloading, installing, or using Layout, or by buying a license, you accept these terms. If you don’t accept them, don’t use Layout.

Layout is free for 14 days from the first time you open it, with every feature. You don’t need a card to start it.

When the trial ends, Layout pauses: every window comes back on screen, and your workspaces and settings are kept. Switching waits for a license key, and entering one resumes Layout.

Layout costs $19, paid once. There’s no subscription.

During early access, until Layout 1.0, it costs $9.99. A license bought then stays valid after 1.0.

Polar takes the payment: it charges your card, handles sales tax, and emails you the receipt with your license key. Polar’s buyer terms cover the payment, and these terms cover Layout and your license. The price can change for future purchases.

Layout is licensed, not sold: you get the right to use it as these terms describe, during the trial and with a license you buy. The developer keeps every other right in Layout, including its code, its name, and its logo.

Your license is personal: it’s for you, and you can’t transfer it to anyone else. With it, you can:

  • Use Layout on up to 2 Macs at a time, for any work, personal or professional.
  • Move it between Macs: release one in Settings › License or in your customer portal, then enter the key on the other. License shows how.
  • Keep using it offline: Layout checks the key with Polar about once a week, and a Mac with a license never locks for being offline.

Within 14 days of buying, you can get a refund, no questions asked: reply to your receipt from Polar, or write to support@getlayout.app. A refund ends your license: at its next check, Layout removes the key from your Macs, and the end of the trial applies again.

These terms don’t take away any right to a refund that your local law gives you.

Your license includes free lifetime updates. Layout checks for a new version every hour and installs it when you choose to update. An update can change how a feature works, remove one, or need a newer version of macOS.

You agree not to:

  • Share your key with other people, post it publicly, or use it on more Macs than it allows.
  • Sell, rent, or lend Layout or your key, or redistribute Layout’s app or installer. To share Layout, send people to getlayout.app.
  • Get around the license check or the end of the trial, or change Layout to do so.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble Layout, except where the law allows it despite this term.

The developer can revoke a key that’s used against these terms.

Layout arranges your apps’ windows into a workspace for each project, with the Accessibility permission you give it. It moves and resizes windows, and moves those of other workspaces out of view. For each workspace, it opens the apps, folders, web addresses, chats, and app links you set up.

It types the terminal commands you gave a workspace into your own shell, and only when that workspace launches: when you launch it, or each time Layout opens if you turned on Launch at Login for it. Switching workspaces never runs a command. Stopping a workspace ends the commands Layout started for it, closes its windows the way their close buttons would, and quits the apps left without one.

You choose what your workspaces open and run, and you’re responsible for it. Layout types your commands and opens your folders and links as you entered them, just as if you did it yourself. Check a command before you give it to Layout, and read the commands in a configuration someone else gives you before you import it. The developer isn’t responsible for what the commands, folders, and links you set up do.

Layout works on your Mac. On its own, it goes online only for your license and updates, and never sends your windows, workspaces, or files. A diagnostics report leaves your Mac only when you send it. Privacy says what Layout stores, reads, and sends, and when.

Layout works with apps it doesn’t own, such as your editor, your terminal, your browsers, Slack, Claude, and Codex. Their own terms apply to them, and an update to one of them can stop a Layout feature from working with it. The developer isn’t responsible for those apps.

Layout isn’t made, endorsed, or sponsored by Apple or by the makers of those apps. Mac and macOS are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Other product names are trademarks of their respective owners.

Layout is provided “as is” and “as available”. The developer works to keep it reliable, but doesn’t promise that it’s free of bugs, that it works with every app, display, or version of macOS, or that it suits your needs. As far as the law allows, the developer gives no warranty, express or implied, including of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Some places don’t allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.

As far as the law allows, the developer isn’t liable for indirect or consequential losses from using Layout or from being unable to use it, such as lost work, data, profits, or time. For any other loss, the developer’s total liability is limited to what you paid for your license.

These limits don’t apply where the law doesn’t allow them, such as for harm caused on purpose or through gross negligence, or for bodily injury.

Your license ends if you get a refund, if you reverse the payment with your bank or card issuer (a chargeback), or if the developer revokes your key because it was used against these terms. Once the key is disabled, Layout removes it at its next license check, and the end of the trial applies again: if the trial is over, Layout pauses, and your workspaces and settings are kept.

You can stop using Layout at any time: Uninstall Layout shows how to remove it. What these terms say about warranties, liability, and the law that applies still holds after your license ends.

The developer may update these terms, for example when Layout or the law changes. The date at the top says when they last changed. A change applies from that date, and using Layout after it means you accept it. A change never takes away what a license you already bought includes: 2 Macs at a time, and free lifetime updates.

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Quebec and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Disputes go to the courts of Quebec, unless the law where you live lets you bring them to a court there. Wherever you live, you keep the protections of your local consumer law that a contract can’t take away.

If part of these terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. These terms are the whole agreement between you and the developer about Layout.

Write to support@getlayout.app with any question about these terms or about Layout. For a payment or a refund, you can also reply to your receipt from Polar.
