0.8.2
LatestNew
Bluetooth in the Layout bar
While Bluetooth is in the macOS menu bar, the Layout bar shows it too. Click it to open the Bluetooth menu and connect your headphones without going to System Settings.
Devin Desktop opens your project
Like VS Code and Cursor, Devin Desktop opens a workspace's folder when the workspace launches, and New Workspace from Project… offers it.
Improved
A guided setup about your projects and agents
It lists the projects Claude and Codex know on your Mac, makes a workspace for each one you check, connects your agents, and shows the Layout Overview and the shortcuts to switch; Activate and launch opens your projects. To go through it again, click Review… next to Guided setup in Settings › About.
Fixed
The Layout bar on macOS 27
Clicking Wi-Fi or the battery no longer opens System Settings instead of its menu, and Control Center and the clock respond again.
New
JetBrains IDEs open your project
WebStorm, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, GoLand, PhpStorm, RubyMine, CLion, Rider, RustRover and Android Studio now open a folder when a workspace launches, as VS Code and Cursor do. Give each workspace its folder, or let the IDE follow the workspace's project folder: Launch finds that project's window, or has the IDE open it. Also opens adds more folders, a window each, and New workspace from project offers these IDEs.
Improved
Each workspace gets its own project window
An editor that reopens every project as it starts puts them all in the workspace you're in. Launching a workspace now takes its project's window from there instead of sharing it, so each workspace ends up with its own. Two projects of the same name, such as two clones of a repository, are told apart too.
New
Swipe up for the Overview, Layout's own Mission Control
On Layout's desktop, the three- or four-finger swipe up opens it under your fingers: every workspace along the top, the selected one's windows spread out as it arranges them, and your agents on the side, ready to answer. Click a window to go to it, or drag it onto another workspace to move it there. Swiping up again still opens macOS's Mission Control, and Swipe up for the Overview in Settings › Shortcuts turns the swipe off. ⌃⌥O (by default) opens the same, new Overview.
Wildcard apps come to you
Call one from any workspace, with a link, the Dock or its own shortcut, and its window joins the workspace you're in instead of taking you away. When you leave, it goes back home: to the workspace whose layout has it, or out of sight in General when none does.
Wildcard apps in your layouts
A layout can now have a wildcard app like any other app: Launch opens and places it, the preview shows it, and the Layout bar, ⌥ Tab and the command palette count it among the workspace's apps. Settings › Apps shows each one's home.
Layout offers to bring an app to you
When the same app keeps taking you out of a workspace and you come back within two minutes, three times in two hours, the notification card offers to make it a wildcard app: Bring It Here or No Thanks.
Improved
Wildcard apps you already have
If one of your layouts lists a wildcard app, that workspace is now its home: its window stays there and visits the others when you call it, instead of always waiting in General. Called in, a wildcard app's window now joins the workspace where new windows go instead of floating over it; a window its app won't resize keeps its size.
New
Answer permission requests from the notification card
When Claude Code or Codex asks before it runs a command, edits a file or uses a tool, the card shows Deny and Allow; hover over it to read the whole request. Unanswered, the request waits in Agents. If you connected Claude Code before, click Update in Settings › Integrations to add its permission hook.
Answer Claude Code's questions and approve its plans from Layout
The card shows the questions with their answers, and a plan with Approve and Keep planning. Unanswered, they wait in Agents.
Swipe between workspaces with the trackpad
On Layout's desktop, the three- or four-finger swipe between desktops (set in System Settings › Trackpad › More Gestures) moves to the next or previous workspace in the Layout bar's order. It's on by default; turn it off in Settings › Shortcuts to get macOS's own swipe back.
Pick any app for a workspace
Other… in the app picker, or a drop from the Finder, adds an app the picker doesn't list, such as a build in a project's folder. The picker says why it refuses an app, such as one built for Simulator.
Fixed
Full screen no longer switches your workspace
When macOS hands the full-screen Space to another app, Layout stays in your workspace instead of following that app to its own. A focus request queued during full screen no longer brings your desktop windows back.
Improved
Agent alerts follow the chat you open
Opening a chat in Claude, Codex or Cursor's editor now marks that session's current alerts as read, including when you switch chats inside the same app. Other sessions stay unread.
Fixed
Device Hub comes back from the Dock or Spotlight
When Device Hub is running from two different Xcode installations, Layout now brings back the window from the installation you open instead of leaving it hidden off screen.
Fixed
Windows an app brings forward no longer stay hidden
A window waiting in General now comes to your current workspace when its app brings it forward, at the size its app gives it and from the place it last had on screen. Before, an app that wouldn't take the size Layout remembered could leave its window hidden. A window taller than the usable screen area keeps its height instead of being shrunk to fit.
Improved
More readable agent alerts
Notifications give the description more room, with the shortcut in the header and up to two lines of text. The Agents quick panel now shows the pending question or unread result beneath the task.
Useful result previews
Claude and Codex previews include details after an opening line such as "Done" and remove Markdown formatting, so you can read more of the result at a glance.
Fixed
Codex task titles stay readable
Answering an agent's question no longer replaces the task title with an internal reply tag. Previously saved tags are cleared when Layout restarts.
No alerts for background suggestions
Codex's background suggestion lists no longer appear as completed tasks with raw JSON in the preview.
Improved
Open an agent alert with one click
Click its title or preview in the Agents quick panel to open the session and close the panel. Mark read still clears the alert without taking you away from your work.
Fixed
Readable Claude previews
New Claude alerts show the message text instead of cross-session sender metadata. Saved previews with complete wrappers are cleaned when Layout restarts.
Improved
Mark all read
Clear all current agent alerts at once from the quick panel or the full Agents dashboard, even while Layout is paused. The quick panel now shows only unread sessions and says All caught up when none remain. Reading a question leaves it waiting for your answer in All agents.
Fixed
Window tracking after sleep
Windows that take a moment to become available after waking your Mac or returning to your desktop keep their workspace and placement. If you switched workspaces while they were unavailable, Layout restores them when they return.
Agent alerts stay read
Opening a session or its notification marks all its current alerts read. Sending a follow-up prompt acknowledges the previous result; the next completion becomes unread again.
No duplicate agent results
Repeated completions update the same session, and Codex's suggested follow-ups no longer appear as completed tasks. Restarting Layout also removes duplicate sessions and suggestion-only results saved by earlier versions.
Open integrations from Agents
Set up integrations closes the quick panel before opening Settings, so it no longer covers the settings window.
New
Focus Agent
Choose an agent session across your projects with ⌃⌥Tab by default. Hold the keys, step through sessions, and release to focus your choice. Sessions needing your reply come first, followed by unread results. Press / to search by project, agent or task, or open Focus Agent from the command palette.
Agents dashboard
See each session's task, status and elapsed time, grouped by workspace. Open Agents in the sidebar for the full view, or use the Agents button for quick access. When the Layout bar is off, the same panel is available from Agents in the macOS menu bar.
Improved
Read results as you open them
Opening a session from Agents or confirming it in Focus Agent marks its current result read. Unread results survive workspace visits and restarting Layout; new completions become unread again. Questions still waiting for your answer stay visible.
Follow work in progress
Updated Claude Code, Codex and Cursor hooks report activity and show a short task excerpt. Use Update in Settings › Integrations if you already connected your agents. When activity can no longer be confirmed, Layout shows Activity unknown.
New
Follow Discord channels
In Settings › Integrations › Discord, use Choose channels… to search by channel or server and select the channels you want to follow. Direct messages stay included, while unselected channels no longer produce individual notifications.
Improved
Finding your channels
An illustrated guide shows you how to open a server in Discord so its visible channels appear in the picker. Switch servers to discover more, or add a channel by its link.
Fixed
Discord’s notification dot
Discord’s dot in the Layout bar now follows new, unseen direct messages and your chosen channels, instead of lighting up for Discord’s overall unread badge.
Improved
Cursor window titles
Project names now come first in window switchers, the command palette and the Overview, making it easier to find the right editor window.
Window notifications
Window switchers now show notification dots and agent attention or completion marks, including in search results.
Fixed
Agents in your current workspace
You now receive agent notifications when another app is in front, even in the workspace you're already using. Bringing the agent's app forward clears its notification; agents running in a terminal follow that terminal.
New notification counts
Opening an app or clearing its notification now acknowledges its existing unread count. Subsequent arrivals show only what's new, so one new message says "1 new" instead of repeating the entire backlog. Existing badges at startup stay out of the notification list.
New
Cursor agent notifications
Connect Cursor in Settings › Integrations to get a notification when its agent finishes a task or stops with an error, in the editor or the CLI. ⌃⌥N (by default) takes you to its workspace and brings the matching editor or terminal window forward.
Discord conversations
See unread DMs and channels from Discord's sidebar in Layout's notifications, and open them directly. The Dock total remains available for conversations the sidebar doesn't expose. Turn this off in Settings › Integrations › Messaging.
Fixed
Windows that answer late
Bringing an app forward now waits briefly for its window to appear, so a slow response no longer leaves the window hidden in another workspace.
Device Hub from the Dock
Clicking Device Hub in the Dock now recalls its hidden window even when macOS reports the app incorrectly.
New
cmux notifications
Each cmux pane with a notification you haven't read in cmux, from an agent or any tool, is now a notification of its own in Layout, in place of cmux's Dock badge. ⌃⌥N (by default) takes you to cmux's window on that tab, the pane ready to type in; the first time, macOS asks to let Layout control cmux. Reading it in cmux clears it. Settings › Integrations turns it off.
Improved
The Layout bar fades under the macOS menu bar
When the menu bar comes down at the top edge of the screen, with ⌃F2, or for a Wi-Fi, battery or Control Center menu opened from the bar, the Layout bar fades out beneath it and back in as it leaves, so the two no longer show through each other.
Fixed
Find Device Hub in General and window search
Open Device Hub windows now appear in General and the window switchers when macOS fails to identify their running process.
Fixed
Find Device Hub when choosing an app
Device Hub and other tools included with Xcode now appear in the application picker without needing to open them first, including when Xcode has been renamed or you have multiple versions installed.
Fixed
Your workspaces launch after login while the screen settles
Workspaces marked Launch at login could all be skipped when macOS changed the screen's usable area during startup. Layout now waits for those changes to finish before launching each workspace, then ends in your default workspace without repeating launches already completed.
Pausing cancels a waiting startup launch
Pausing Layout and immediately resuming no longer lets a pending automatic launch start your workspaces afterward.
Fixed
Launch opens browser tabs again on macOS 27
When Firefox, Chrome, Edge or Brave was already open, launching a workspace could fail to open its browser window, and Firefox showed "Profile Missing", for example as soon as Layout opened and launched your workspaces. The window now opens in the browser you have open.
New
⌘ \` lists the app's windows
Hold ⌘ after ⌘ \
to see every window of the app you're in, from every workspace, those of the workspace you're in first. A quick ⌘ \goes back to the app's window you used before. \or ↓ moves, releasing ⌘ opens, and / searches by title or workspace. A window in another workspace takes you there. **Use ⌘ \for the app's windows in Settings › Shortcuts** turns it off.
Fixed
An app that quits and opens again goes back to its workspace
After an update or a crash, its new windows return to the workspace its windows were in, even when they open on another page or show a startup window first, as Discord does. Bringing the app forward takes you there.
Fixed
Calling a busy app no longer leaves its window out of sight
Clicking a Messages notification could leave Messages in front with its window hidden. A wildcard app, or an app in no workspace, now gets its window as soon as it answers, within 3 seconds. Past that, the keyboard goes back to the workspace you're in, so you never type into a window you can't see.
Claude and Codex keep the new chat you started
Coming back to a workspace no longer replaces it with the project's latest chat when the app stayed covered in the workspace you visited, and dragging a file onto the app no longer switches it to another chat before you drop. Links to other apps, such as a Slack channel, follow the same rules.
A covered app's link no longer opens late, over what you're doing
It waits until you bring the app forward through Layout: the Layout bar, a switcher or the palette. Bring the app forward from the Dock, or with its own notification or shortcut, and the app keeps what you see.
Fixed
Escape cancels a drag in the sidebar
Pressing Escape while you drag a workspace or a section in the sidebar now puts it back where it was, and nothing is saved. Before, Escape did nothing until you let go of the mouse.
Fixed
Updates go straight to the newest version
A version Layout had downloaded earlier no longer installs first and holds back a newer one. Layout now only announces an update: choose Update available in the bar, Update to Layout in the menu bar icon's menu, or Update… in Settings › General, and it checks again, then downloads and installs the latest version.
New
Send Feedback
Send an idea, a problem or anything else to Layout's developer: Send Feedback… is in the menu bar icon's menu, Settings › About and the command palette. Only your message, your contact if you leave one, and your versions of Layout and macOS are sent. For a problem, Switch to Diagnostics carries your text over to Send Diagnostics…, which adds Layout's state. Settings › About also links Layout's Discord.
Fixed
Windows with a sheet open
Selecting a window while a sheet is attached to it, like a save dialog or an alert, no longer pauses and then says "macOS did not focus the selected window." The sheet gets the keyboard right away. Switching to a workspace whose last window has a sheet open no longer puts the keyboard in another window.
Fixed
Recover button
The editor's header no longer shows an orange Recover count for windows you closed, or whose app quit, while they were hidden in another workspace. The button is gone: Recover Hidden Windows stays in the menu bar icon's menu and the command palette, on ⌃⌥⇧R by default.
Fixed
Apps without a workspace
Apps you haven't configured in any workspace now open in your current workspace and return to General when you switch away. Reopening them no longer hides their windows immediately. Calling an existing window from the Dock brings it from General into your current workspace until your next switch. Apps you've assigned to a workspace keep their placement.
App dialogs and popups
Opening a dialog or popup no longer brings the app's main window in front of it or pulls you into another workspace. Dialogs keep focus so you can use their controls.
Improved
Settings navigation
Switching between General and Windows no longer waits for macOS to report your login and menu bar settings.
Project setup
Folder icons and terminal command suggestions load in the background, keeping the editor responsive while you configure a workspace. Folder warnings refresh when you return from Finder.
Less background work
Layout stops redrawing its editor and workspace bar while they're hidden.
Fixed
Window tracking
Windows temporarily missing from an app's response keep their workspace, zone and sharing assignments across a Layout restart. Recovery also keeps track of hidden windows that still need to be restored.
New windows after a slow launch
Layout retries window tracking when an app isn't ready, then checks for windows opened in the meantime. Setting up tracking no longer blocks the interface.
Terminal integration
Large responses from terminal tools no longer cause false timeouts or leave Layout waiting indefinitely. Tools that exceed their time limit are stopped and report an error.
Shared Ghostty terminal
Retrying a slow startup no longer connects a delayed terminal window to the wrong workspace's tmux session.
Configuration imports
If Layout can't save an imported configuration, it now reports the failure and keeps your current workspaces instead of showing changes that would disappear after a restart.
Improved
Moving and resizing windows
Your app's content stays visible instead of being covered by Layout's frosted overlay. With window borders off, Layout also reduces its background work during moves and resizes.
Fixed
Browser launch without saved tabs
Launch now opens a window in Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Brave even when you haven't configured any tabs and the browser is already running without a window.
Workspace bar
Removed the gray line along the bottom of the bar.
Improved
General's switcher stays open
⌃⌥. by default now opens General's list right away and keeps it open when you let go of the keys, even after a quick press. Move with Tab or the arrow keys, then press Return or click a row to open it; Esc or a click outside cancels.
Fixed
Shared Ghostty window
Its tmux session now follows your switches even while other Ghostty windows are open, instead of stopping with a warning. Layout remembers the window, even after it restarts, and when it's closed, Launch opens a new one and leaves your other Ghostty windows alone. After updating, launch a workspace that shares Ghostty once, then close the old shared window.
Fixed
Codex approvals
With Codex's auto-review on, Layout no longer tells you that Codex needs your approval when its reviewer answers the request itself: a command that runs without you no longer brings an amber mark or a notification card. Conversations where you approve commands yourself still notify you, and Layout still lets you know when Codex finishes.
Improved
Workspace sidebar
Showing and hiding the editor's sidebar now animates smoothly, preserving its scroll position and collapsed sections. The animation respects Reduce Motion.
Fixed
Windows stay in their workspaces
When an app briefly closes and recreates a recognizable project or document window, Layout now restores its workspace and shared placements. This fixes a case where reopening an editor while another workspace was active moved its window there, leaving a grey icon in the original workspace. Each project window is matched separately, including editors configured to open several folders.
New
Find settings by typing
In the command palette, type what you're looking for: a setting or a shortcut opens Settings on its row, lit for a moment, and Edit followed by a workspace's name opens that workspace in the editor. Press ⌘K in the editor or Settings, or click Search in the editor's header, even while Layout is paused.
The documentation in the palette
The same search finds the pages and sections of Layout's documentation, which open in your browser.
Help buttons
A ? at the bottom of the Settings tabs, and one in Send Diagnostics…, opens the part of the documentation that explains them.
Improved
New Folder in folder pickers
When you choose a workspace's project folder, the folder of a new workspace from a project, an editor's other folders or an app's folder, New Folder creates it right there.
Fixed
A window whose app resizes it again right after Layout tiles it, like the Android emulator, no longer flickers in its zone. It stays where the app puts it, as if you had moved it yourself.
Windows of a program that isn't an app bundle, such as the Android emulator, no longer join the New windows zone: they arrive floating, and Launch and Reapply leave them there.
Improved
Wildcard apps wait in General
A wildcard app you call still comes to the workspace you're in, but it no longer stays behind when you leave: its window waits in General, out of sight, until you call it again from wherever you are. Going back to that workspace, or to General, doesn't bring it back, so your workspaces no longer collect the wildcard apps they used.
Your wildcard apps in General's switcher
⌃⌥. by default lists every wildcard app after General's windows, including the ones with no window open. Picking one brings it to the workspace you're in instead of taking you to General.
⌥Tab shows each workspace's own apps
A wildcard app you call into a workspace no longer adds its icon to that workspace's row in ⌥Tab and in the command palette. The Layout bar still shows it while it's there.
New
Changelog
Settings › Changelog shows what changed in every version of Layout, newest first, in one scroll, with the day each one came out. The version on your Mac is marked Installed, and the notes come with the app, so the tab works offline.
Fixed
Reopening Layout no longer piles the windows it doesn't know into the workspace you were in, such as windows opened while it was closed or those of an app that restarted meanwhile. They start in General, as after a restart of your Mac, and the workspaces that launch at login take their apps' windows from there.
Launch and Reapply no longer take a floating window they tidy into the New windows zone out of the other workspaces that share it: a Finder window you share with another workspace stays there. The windows of the apps the layout lists still leave the workspaces that don't use those apps.
New
Remove from a workspace
A window that ended up in the wrong workspace can now leave it: in the editor's Open windows, its … menu has Remove from followed by the workspace's name. The window stays in the other workspaces that share it, or goes to General when it was only there. Move To now lists every workspace but the one you're looking at.
Fixed
Launching a workspace no longer leaves the windows it takes over in another workspace that doesn't use their app: launching Communication now takes Discord's window out of the workspace it opened in. Workspaces whose layout includes the app still share its window, and Reapply follows the same rule.
After you log in, Launch at login no longer piles the windows of the apps macOS reopens into the first workspace it launches. It first waits for those apps to finish opening, 30 seconds at most, and their windows stay in General.
Fixed
Launching a workspace no longer adds its tabs again, each time, to the Chrome, Edge or Brave window you used last. Like Firefox, these browsers now open the tabs together in a new window of their own, and launching again uses that window until you close it or quit the browser.
New
Launch at login
Turn it on for the workspaces you start your day with, in Settings › General or in a workspace's menu. Each time Layout opens, at login too, it launches them, opening their apps and placing their windows, and ends in the one you made Default.
Restart to Update
Layout now checks for a new version every hour and downloads it in the background. When it's ready, Restart to Update in the Layout bar shows what's new, and Restart Now opens Layout again on the new version in a few seconds. Quitting Layout installs it too.
Fixed
Waking your Mac no longer moves your other workspaces' windows into the one in front. Apps can lose track of their windows for a moment around sleep, and each window now keeps its workspace.
Improved
Slow switches explained
When a workspace switch takes a quarter of a second or more, or Layout freezes for a moment, the report from Send Diagnostics… now shows where the time went: Layout working, waiting for memory, or waiting for a processor. It also notes your Mac's state, such as memory pressure, heat or Low Power Mode, and which of Layout's windows were open, so a slowdown on your Mac can be traced to its cause.
New
Notifications
When an app's Dock badge appears or grows, or an agent asks for you or finishes, in another workspace, a card shows at the top of the screen for a few seconds, out of the camera housing on a MacBook. ⌃⌥N takes you to the next one, ⌃⌥P back, and ⌃⌥/ lists them all, from every workspace, by default. Turn the cards off in Settings › General, under Show notification cards.
Straight to the agent
An agent's notification brings forward the session that asked for you: its chat in Claude or Codex, even when the project has several, the terminal or editor window that shows its folder, or its tmux pane. ⌃⌥J became ⌃⌥N; a key you had set for it carries over.
Search the switchers
Press / in ⌥Tab, General's switcher or Layout's ⌘Tab, then type part of a name or of a window's title: iph finds the Simulator window titled iPhone 17. When nothing in the list matches, the windows of every workspace are searched.
A switcher for General
⌃⌥. by default lists General's windows from any workspace and takes you there, and ⌥Tab leaves General out. Turn it off in Settings › Shortcuts, under Give General a switcher of its own.
Send Diagnostics
When something goes wrong, Send Diagnostics… in the menu bar icon's menu sends Layout's state and what you write to its developer, in one click. Window titles, commands and link parameters become aliases unless you include them, Show What's Sent shows exactly what goes, and Save to File… still saves a file instead.
New
Your own tmux sessions
Check Run in a tmux session in a terminal's dialog to pick the session its window shows, from a list you can search like your Claude and Codex projects. Keep New session for the workspace's own, with or without commands, or pick one of yours: Layout attaches the terminal to it as it is, types nothing into it, and starts it again under its name when it isn't running. Stopping the workspace closes that window and leaves your session running.
Terminal panes you arrange like zones
A terminal's Commands now draws its window with each pane where it opens. Click a pane to type its command, and hover it to split it right or down, or to remove it. Any pane can split, so two columns of two work, and your existing panes keep their arrangement.
Improved
The Overview gets a macOS title bar with a close button, and its shortcut hints move to the bottom. The command palette's search field sits at the very top, and the editor's dialogs close with Cancel or Esc, like macOS sheets.
Fixed
Launching a workspace no longer blocks switching workspaces, for up to two minutes, while its simulator boots. The device now boots in the background: the other apps land at once, and its window takes its zone when you're back in that workspace. Pausing Layout or stopping the workspace ends a boot still under way.
The Overview no longer hides the names of its first row of workspaces behind an empty band.
The switches in Settings › General keep their color while another window, such as the update window, is in front.
New
Drop onto apps from the Dock
Drag a file onto an app's icon in the Dock and hold it there a moment: Layout brings that app's window forward, taking you to its workspace, so you can drop into it. A wildcard app's window comes to the workspace you're in instead. An app you bring forward another way during a drag, such as with ⌘ Tab, now comes before you let go too.
Several folders in one editor
Cursor and VS Code can open more folders than the project's: add them under Also opens in the editor's dialog. Each folder gets its own window, which the editor's zones take in turn, so two repositories can share a workspace.
One Ghostty window across workspaces
Check Share one Ghostty window across workspaces in Ghostty's dialog, in each workspace that should share it: switching workspaces then moves that window to the workspace's tmux session, so each workspace keeps its panes and running processes without a second window.
Improved
New workspace… asks for the name before adding the workspace. A new setup starts with General alone: the guided setup creates your first workspace, with its Name field ready.
In the editor's preview, clicking the space around a zone's apps adds another app to that zone, not only when the zone is empty. Clicking an app selects its zone.
Fixed
Recover Hidden Windows (⌃⌥⇧R by default) no longer moves every hidden window into the workspace in front: each window keeps its workspaces, as after a pause. The Recover button in the editor now only appears for windows Layout lost track of.
Layout no longer freezes for a few seconds when a workspace opens its Claude or Codex chat while your displays are changing.
The Layout bar no longer squeezes the workspace's name and its agent mark when many app icons are shown: the icons scroll instead.
Improved
New Section… now lets you name a section before creating it. Canceling leaves your sidebar unchanged.
Fixed
Opening a minimized window from the editor, Layout bar or window switcher now waits for the Dock animation to finish before restoring its position and keyboard focus. This prevents a false confirmation error that could leave the keyboard in the wrong window.
New
Stop a workspace
Stop Workspace…, in the Layout bar's menu, the editor and the command palette, gives the commands Layout started in the workspace's terminal a Ctrl-C, so your dev server frees its port, then closes the workspace's windows and quits the apps no other workspace uses. Windows it shares stay open, apps still ask about unsaved work, and Launch starts it again. Settings › Shortcuts can give it a key.
Arrange apps on the canvas
Drag an app to another zone, to another place in its stack, or onto Floating under the preview: in the workspace you're in, its windows follow at once. The row lifts and follows the pointer, the others make room, and Esc cancels. A row's right-click menu does the same without dragging, and ⌘Z undoes any edit in the editor.
Your workspaces survive updates
After an update, a crash, or a quit and reopen, each window still open goes back to its workspace, Layout comes back to the one you were in, and the keyboard to the window you used last. After a restart of your Mac, windows start in General, as before.
A command line, links and agents
layoutctllists, switches, launches and stops workspaces from a terminal, a script or a launcher, andlayoutctl subscribereports each switch to a status bar; agetlayout://switch?workspace=Namelink switches from Raycast, Alfred or a Stream Deck. Install it from Settings › Integrations, where Add connects Claude Code and Codex too: when an agent asks for you or finishes in another workspace, the Layout bar, the switcher and the Overview show it, and ⌃⌥J by default takes you there.Send a window from the keyboard
A workspace's shortcut with ⌘ added, ⌃⌥⌘1…9 by default, sends the window you used last to that workspace, and you stay where you are.
Export and import
Settings › General › Configuration saves your workspaces and settings to a file and reads one back, to keep a copy or set up another Mac.
Improved
Launch waits for your dev server
When the workspace's browser opens a local address such as localhost:5173, its terminal starts first and the tab opens once the server answers, instead of a page that can't connect.
Fixed
Stop Session… in the terminal's dialog now stops the commands running in the session too: the dev server no longer keeps its port, and the terminal no longer switches to another of your tmux sessions.
Windows stay where they belong. Following an app you clicked in the Dock no longer moves a floating window into the corner of the screen, windows an app hands back after sleep keep their workspace, and after a switch the keyboard lands in the window you used last among those on screen.
New
Terminal commands
Give a workspace's terminal the commands to start, such as your dev server, and launching the workspace runs them in your own shell, in the project's folder. Ghostty, iTerm2 and WezTerm show them as panes of one window, placed with an arrow per command; Terminal and kitty open a window each, and cmux a tab. Check Keep them running when the window closes to run them in tmux instead.
Projects
The Project card gives a workspace one folder: your editor and terminal open it at launch, and Claude and Codex bring back its latest chat. New Workspace from Project… builds a workspace from a Claude or Codex project, or any folder, with your usual editor and terminal and the project's dev server.
All your displays
A workspace now spans every connected display, and switching workspaces switches them all. Choose a display above the editor's canvas to set its zones and apps. When you unplug a display, its windows wait on the main one until you plug it back in.
Intel Macs
Layout now runs on Intel Macs as well as on Apple silicon.
Improved
Layout bar
Clicking the clock opens Notification Center, and Wi-Fi, battery and Control Center open their macOS menus. The battery shows its exact level and whether it's charging, and a red dot after the workspace's name tells you that an app in another workspace has a Dock badge; the switcher and the Overview mark those apps too.
Blocked shortcuts
When Secure Keyboard Entry blocks Layout's shortcuts, Layout now tells you, and names the app holding it when it can.
Accessibility after an update
When macOS keeps refusing Layout although it's on in System Settings, the setup and Settings now read Still refused by macOS and tell you to remove Layout with − and add it back with +.
Fixed
Hiding or quitting an app with ⌘H or ⌘Q no longer brings a wildcard app's window into your workspace.
New
Free trial, then a license
Layout is free for 14 days with every feature, then needs a license, bought and entered in Settings › License (Activate in Layout, after you pay, fills in the key). When the trial ends, Layout pauses and puts every window back on screen until you enter a key.
Updates
Layout checks for a new version once a day. When one is out, the bar shows Update available and the menu bar icon's menu offers it: nothing opens by itself. Settings › General turns the daily check off.
A Settings window
Settings open in a window of their own, without the editor: General, Windows, Apps, Shortcuts, About and License, one ⌘1 to ⌘6 away.
Hyper, and launch shortcuts of your own
A Hyper key (⌃⌥⇧⌘, from Karabiner or your keyboard's firmware) works for any shortcut. In Settings › Shortcuts, a workspace's Launch shortcut can now be one you record, instead of its shortcut with ⇧ added.
Wildcard apps in ⌘ Tab
With Layout's ⌘ Tab on, your wildcard apps are listed in every workspace, after its own windows, even when they have no window open. Pick one and it comes to the workspace you're in. Settings › Apps turns this off.
Improved
Notarized by Apple
No more Open Anyway when you install or update Layout. If you're updating from an earlier version, allow Layout once more in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility.
One list for a workspace's apps
In the editor, each app's row shows where it goes, a zone or Floating, and its menu moves it or makes it float. Add app asks where first.
Quieter defaults
Window borders are off until you turn them on in Settings › Windows, even if you never changed them. New configurations start with no space between windows, and new workspaces from the Stacked layout.
